Barcelona yet to make progress on Frenkie de Jong and Ronald Araujo contracts

Barca are yet to make any progress on new contracts for Ronald Araujo and Frenkie de Jong, although sporting director Deco was keen to strike an overall optimistic tone in a recent interview. Both are out of contract in 2026, meaning Barcelona will be looking to renew within the next seven months or consider selling next summer.

De Jong’s future has been heavily questioned in recent months and there was no response to a contract offer made last season. Araujo’s situation is more optimistic, but Marca confirms that there is no progress on his deal either. Regarding De Jong, Barcelona offered to cut his salary to a level they considered fair, but the club’s sporting department suspected that he did not want to renew his contract.

Barca consider the Uruguayan a key player and are willing to significantly increase his salary to reflect this. Deco and head coach Hansi Flick consider him one of the best players in the world after his full recovery and believe he can partner Paul Kubalsi at Kambasa in the coming years.

While there has been no progress on his situation and nothing has been confirmed, his agent is expected to arrive in Barcelona before the winter break to discuss Araujo’s future. His agent may sit down with Deco to see if a compromise can be made.

Of course, in Araujo’s case, he’s almost always been a regular when healthy, and at 25 years old, it would make sense to extend his contract even if they do intend to sell him at some point. As far as the Dutch midfield is concerned, the emergence of Marc Casado certainly comes at the right time for the Blaugrana as it means that if they do feel that De Jong can get the job done in midfield, then they no longer need to De Jong’s service was gone.
