Manchester United hoping to sign Alvaro Carreras this winter

Manchester United to be boosted by signing of Martin Baturina

The Red Devils recently confirmed the appointment of Amorim as their new head coach, who will officially take up the post in the coming days. The 39-year-old is expected to feature a 3-4-3 formation and O Jogo believes Carreras can fit into the Portuguese’s tactics “like a glove”.

Benfica chairman Rui Costa has no plans to part ways with Carreras in January, but Ojogo revealed United had the option of buying him back as part of a transfer package last summer. Carreras has a £42m release clause in his contract, but the Red Devils will only have to re-sign him for £17m from next year.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are also interested in the defender, but Manchester United have the clear advantage in the competition.

Great potential

The 21-year-old is regarded as one of the best young graduates from United’s academy but has failed to break through into the first team. Luke Shaw and Tyrell Marascia were ruled out through injury earlier this year, but manager Erik ten Hag has not stopped Carreras leaving on loan with a buyout clause.

The left-back had a rocky start to his Benfica career, but he has found his feet with several outstanding performances this season. The Spaniard has amassed 2 goals and 2 assists and has also impressed with his tackling, aerial presence and distribution. His tireless work ethic also attracted people’s attention.

With Amorim at the helm, the door could be open for Carreras to return to the Red Devils. Considering he is an attacking left-back, he could play a role at left-winger under the new head coach. Lisandro Martinez can also feature on the left side of the back three if he needs a breather.

It remains to be seen whether United will activate the clause this winter or wait until the end of the season. With Shaw and Malacia back, Amorim can assess their performances before considering re-signing Carreras from Benfica.
